Strengthening Communities, Dyke Wall Project in Lath Basti, Karachi LEPCL is dedicated to making a positive impact in communities facing environmental challenges. Lath Basti, a small fishing village located adjacent to the LEPCL Plant next to the cost, has faced heavy rains, cyclones and rising sea levels, resulting in widespread flooding and displacement. Recognizing the urgent need for action, LEPCL partnered with local community members to implement a solution that would safeguard lives and property of our neighboring community. Our CSR initiative began with the construction of a dyke wall in Lath Basti-1 in 2021-2022, completed in just four months at a cost of Pkr 17 million rupees. Our dyke wall project aims to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters by providing a vital barrier against flooding. Through meticulous planning and construction, we have fortified the community’s defenses, ensuring resilience in the face of future torrential rains, cyclones and sea level rise. When subsequent cyclones struck, the dyke wall proved its effectiveness, preventing flooding and safeguarding Lath Basti-I while neighboring Lath Basti 2 was almost completely inundated. Recognizing the urgent need to extend the protection, LEPCL invested an additional PKR 22 million to construct another protective dyke wall for Lath Basti 2, completing the project within six months. Through meaningful and tangible investments in infrastructure that protects our vulnerable communities neighboring our Plant site, we are empowering residents to thrive in the face of adversity. Our CSR project not only strengthens physical resilience but also fosters a sense of security and hope for the future and creates a lasting bond between LEPCL and our neighbors.
